After leaving my boat a week ago I did not thoroughly check the fender placement and upon returning the other day I observed the beam had ground up against the dock where I moore. The contact was against a treated wood finger pier and the area damaged is roughly 2"x4" of paint fully removed from the hull. The surrounding area, approximately 6"x15" has some pretty big abrasions as well. Very fortunately for me, the damage is only cosmetic.

Given the extent of the damage I am figuring there is nothing I can do to restore the area like the damage never happened without fully repainting the hull, which I am unable to do anytime soon.
I do have the remaining brightside paint that was used on the hull before I bought the boat. So of course the looming question is: is there any sort of temporary repair process that could mask the damage/abrasions?

The boat is a 1973 San Juan 24. I have no prior experience applying brightside or any other topside hull paint too, so I'm as dumb about the paint as my fender placement...

Sorry to hear about the bit of damage which you have experienced with the boat. However considering that the damage is simply cosmetic as you have mentioned, then the repair/repainting should be quite simplistic and I would recommend that you use the following system:

1. Sand the affected area with 120 grit paper to remove all loose/flaking paint as well as to place a good sanding profile in the surface itself
2. Remove all sanding residue by wiping the surface clean with Special Thinner 216 or Brushing Liquid 333
3. Apply 1 coat of Pre-Kote Primer
4. Sand the Pre-Kote with 220 grit paper
5. Remove all sanding residue by wiping the surface clean with Special Thinner 216 or Brushing Liquid 333
6. Inspect the Pre-Kote and if there are any imperfections showing, then fill in each of those areas with Watertite Epoxy Filler which is a 100% solids epoxy filler (Only needed if imperfections are present)
7. Sand the Watertite with 220 grit paper (Only needed if Watertite were applied)
8. Remove all sanding residue by wiping the surface clean with Special Thinner 216 or Brushing Liquid 333 (Only needed if Watertite were applied and sanded)
9. Apply a 2nd coat of Pre-Kote
10. Sand the Pre-Kote with 220 grit paper
11. Remove all sanding residue by wiping the surface clean with Special Thinner 216 or Brushing Liquid 333
12. Apply 1 coat of Brightside
13. Sand the Brightside with 320 grit paper
14. Remove all sanding residue by wiping the surface clean with Special Thinner 216 or Brushing Liquid 333
15. Apply a 2nd coat of Brightside
