Hi there - I'm looking into buying a San Juan 24 that is moored in puget sound. The boat was painted back in April and apparently the owner applied the same topcoat polyurethane to the bottom as he did to the rest of the hull, hand rolled. The boat has been in the water with this bottom since April...
So my questions; what concerns should a buyer have on a boat that's been sitting in salt water for 3+ months w/ a polyurethane bottom? What would I be getting myself into if I were to buy the boat with the intention of putting a proper bottom on?
Thanks in advance for any advice/direction!

Hi,
More then likley that polyurethane coating will be bubbling/blistering/peeling off the surface. The reasoning would be that these coatings are not intended to be immeresed and when left in the water the moisture will end up migrating into the coating itself which will then get trapped between the layers and begin to cause separation of the layers.
Whether the polyurethane topcoat were in fact blistering or not it unfortunately will still need to be completey removed back down to the bare surface prior to applying the antifouling bottom paint.
I apologize for any inconvenience and hope this helps.

Thank you Jay! That's pretty much what I expected and I'm glad to have a professional confirm for me. I haven't made an offer on the boat, and if I do this is incredibly helpful information to have.
